CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Police arrived to apprehend Marlon Greef. After theyâd gone over the details with the local authorities, Rylie stomped toward Michaelâs truck, sighing in defeat. It was coming upon noon, now, and this case that sheâd hoped to find a quick end to was now likely to drag on. Theyâd taken one step forward, and two steps back.
âOkay, okay,â Michael said as he started the engine. âMaybe itâs not wrapped up in a nice, tidy bow. But we did find out who killed those girls. Thatâs a good thing.â
âI guess. Sure. Youâre right. It is good,â she admitted.
Still, it didnât feel like enough.
âAnd maybe the police will question him further and find out heâs our man.â
She shook her head adamantly. âHeâs not our man, Bris.â
Brisbane had been backing out toward the main road, but now, he stopped and looked at her. âWhat do you mean? Yeah, Iâll admit itâs iffy. But he could be lying about not killing Marie and Jessie.â
âHeâs not,â she said simply.
A crease appeared on his forehead. âAnd how do you figure that?â
She reached into her bag and pulled out her phone. âBecause based on the crime scene photos, the killer of Jessie Vega and Marie Bottoms was right handed. And Marlon Greef was clearly left-handed. I could tell by the bow.â
Michaelâs mouth opened, and for a moment, he didnât say anything. âWait, how do you know the recent victims were murdered by a right-handed person?â
âWell, I donât know for sure. The killer might be ambidextrous. Because there were pressure marks on both womenâs shoulders from where he held them down with his left hand. Of course, heâd probably use his dominant hand to hold the pillow over her mouth. Right?â
She thrust the photo under his nose and he nodded. âOkay. I didnât notice that. Marlon could be ambidextrous, too, you know.â
âNo. Not likely. Left-handed bows cost a hell of a lot more. Why would anyone pay that much extra for no reason?â
He nodded. âMakes sense. Spoken like a true southpaw.â
She held up her left hand and smiled. âThatâs right. We always get scammed, having to pay more for everything. Itâs discrimination.â
âHmm. I didnât realize the trauma you left-handers had to go through,â he said, shifting into gear and driving onto the road. âHow did you know about the bows, anyway?â
âI have a friend,â she thought, thinking of her buddy Hal Buxton, her surrogate father, and how heâd bought Rylie her first bow, when she was only twelve. Theyâd go out hunting sometimes, and over the course of a few years, though heâd been a curmudgeonly widower and loner at first, heâd come to enjoy her company as much as she enjoyed his.
âThatâs mysterious. That Rich guy?â
âNo. That Hal guy. Remember him?â
He nodded slowly, and said, âRight,â in a way that made her think he was suspicious of her answer.
She stared at him. Heâd been acting slightly jealous, ever since heâd met Cooper Rich, her old friend from the Seattle FBI office. At first, sheâd insisted there was nothing going on, but then Cooper had gone and professed how much heâd missed her.
